Halibut Derby: May 23 to Sept 1
One of three fish derbies the Greater Whittier Chamber of Commerce
is sponsoring this summer, the Halibut Derby starts Memorial Day
weekend and runs through Labor Day weekend. The daily entry fee
is $5, weekly $25 and $100 for the season. Monthly awards are
given to first, second and third place halibut that come closest
to the target weight. A jackpot for the biggest fish will be awarded
at the end of the season. All fish entries will be weighed at
the weigh-in station, located at Fee’s Custom Seafoods on the
Whittier Harbor Triangle, daily between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
Derby tickets and regulations are available at businesses around
Whittier.
2008 Annual Walk to Whittier: June 8 beginning at 2:30 pm
Sponsored by the Greater Whittier Chamber of Commerce in cooperation
with the Alaska Department of Transportation, the “Walk” is your
opportunity to walk through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel
– North America’s longest vehicle tunnel. Participants can park
at the Portage Glacier Visitor Center where the Forest Service
will present a special historical slide show about the construction
of the tunnel. Shuttles from the Visitor Center to the tunnel’s
Bear Valley staging area begin at 1:30 p.m. Walkers will begin
the 2.5-mile trek through the tunnel at 2:30 p.m. Leading the
pack with his dogs will be Whittier’s local Iditarod musher Perry
Solmonson. Once walkers reach the Whittier side of the tunnel
they can continue to walk into Whittier along the scenic waterfront
or ride a bus into town. There will be activities, food specials,
shop discounts as well as kayaking and dog sledding demonstrations
in the harbor business area. Bring bike helmets to wear in the
tunnel (hard hats will be provided for those without helmets).
Children under 5 are welcome in covered strollers. Bikes or inline
skates are not allowed for safety reasons.
Kick off the Independence Day festivities at evening of July 3rd just before midnight with a spectacular Fire Works display. Enjoy an old-fashion July 4th celebration in Whittier. This community event begins with a parade along the harbor front starting at the Whittier Community School at 1:00pm followed by a free BBQ in the Protzman Pavilion. There will be a renaissance re-enactment and games for the kids including face painting, balloon tying, coin dig, pie throwing and much much more
